It needs a strong character, without hatred or malice, for the thought of God cannot survive in a climate of pride and greed...

It is no mean achievement to
get the Name of the Lord
on one's tongue at the last moment.

It needs the practice of many years,
based on a deep-seated faith.

It needs a strong character,
without hatred or malice, for the
thought of God cannot survive in a
climate of pride and greed.

And how do you know which moment is the last?

Yama, the God of Death, does not give
notice of his arrival to take hold of you.
He is like the man with the camera taking snapshots;
he does not warn, "Ready, I am clicking."

If you wish to hang your portrait
on the walls of Heaven, it must be attractive;
your stance, your pose, your smile must all be nice, is it not?

It is best to be ready for the click,
night and day, with the name ever tripping
on the tongue and the glory always radiant in the mind.
Then, when your photo is shot, it will be fine.

Words to ponder.... isn't it strange? how faithful are you?

Words to Ponder - isn't it strange?

Isn't it strange how a 10 dollar note seems like such a large amount when you donate it to temple or to a Poor person, but such a small amount when you go shopping?

Isn't it strange how 2 hours seem so long when you're at a hurch or temple, and how short they seem when you're watching a good movie?

Isn't it strange that you can't find a word to say when you're praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?

Isn't it strange how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel ?

Isn't it strange how we need to know about an event for church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events in the last minute?

Isn't it strange how difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?

Isn't it strange how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers
say, but we question the words in the Bible?

Isn't it strange that We Hear and Read Holy verses and teachings and still try to Practise other things ?

Its Strange isn't it ?

God will never force you to take up a particular name and form of the Lord... The Lord has a million names and a million forms...

God will never force you to take up
a particular name and form of the Lord.

The Lord has a million names and a million forms,
and He wants that faith and attachment should be evoked
in you by any one of them, as you recite the Names or contemplate the Forms.

That is why there is a string of 1008 names
to use for worship; the devotee might be drawn closer
to the Lord while any one name is being repeated,
however distracted or inattentive he might be during the rest of the list.

Suggestion is this:

just as you attend to the needs of the body,
feeding it three times a day, in order to keep
it in good running condition, so too, spend
some time regularly everyday to keep your
Inner Consciousness also in good trim.

Spend one hour in the morning,
another at night and a third in
the early hours of the dawn, for recitation
of the Name and meditation on the Lord.

You will find great peace descending
on you and great new sources of strength
welling up within you as you progress in this spiritual quest.

After some time, the mind will dwell on
the Name wherever you are and whatever
you are engaged in; and then, peace and joy will be your inseparable companions.

Like the coldness of the atmosphere
which freezes the water, the compelling agony
of the devotee's heart solidifies the Formless absolute
into the shape and attitude that are yearned for;
for, "as felt, so fashioned." He bows to your will,
He carries your burden, provided you trust Him with it.

The most direct method of spiritual success is desireless action,

But action and the fruit thereof are not two separate entities,
the fruit is the action itself, in its final stage, the climax, the conclusion.

The flower is the fruit; the fruit is the flower; one is the beginning, the other is the legitimate end. The flower becomes the fruit. The action becomes the consequence.

There is no stopping place in this pilgrimage; it is one continuous journey, through day and night; through valley and desert; through tears and smiles; through death and birth; through tomb and womb.

When the road ends, and the Goal is gained, the pilgrim finds that he has traveled only from himself to Himself, that the way was long and lonesome, but the God that led him unto it was all the while in him, around him, with him and beside him! Do not fear God's Love....

Do not fear God’s love, for He does not love

One’s duty is to act, act well, act good;

It is God’s gift to man. Hence,

Man's nature is Love.
He cannot survive a moment,

It is the very breath of his life.

When the six vices, to which

Love is the only occupant of the heart;

It cannot be alone.

So, it is directed to the dark-blue Divine Child,
the charming cowherd Boy, who is Purity Personified,
who is the embodiment of service, sacrifice and selflessness,
who has taken residence in that cleansed Altar.

Or, perhaps it is directed to that little boy,
born at the humble stable far away from home,
who is the embodiment of truth, faith and love,
who has sacrificed his life for his love of all of us.

There is no scope now for any other attachment to grow.
So, step by step, this Love for God becomes deeper,
purer, more self-denying, until at last, there is

Salt, pepper and the spices of life...

Salt, Pepper and the Spices of Life

You're sitting at a table, having a meal with some friends.
Bowls of soup are served to everyone at the table. Before
tasting the soup, the person next to you reaches for the salt
and pepper, and for the next 20 seconds vigorously shakes into
the soup more salt and pepper than you would use in a month.

You have a pained look on your face. These thoughts
immediately go through your mind: "Why would you put salt and
pepper in soup, or on any dish, BEFORE you taste it? How do
you know how much to add?" You might also think, "How can
someone put so much salt and pepper in their food?"

Of course, the roles could be reversed. You might be the one
who loves to put a lot of salt and pepper on your food and the
person next to you eats the soup without adding salt or
pepper. In that case, you think, "How can she eat this bland
soup without putting any seasoning in it?"

When it comes to salt, pepper, onions, garlic, curry or just
about any type of seasoning, we tend to see things only one
way - OUR way. It's hard for us to understand how someone
could enjoy food when it is not seasoned as we think is
appropriate. We cringe when we see someone "overdoing" or
"under-doing" the spices.

How we season our food is a matter of preference and personal
taste. There is no right or wrong way to use seasonings.
Furthermore, the way in which another applies salt and pepper
does not affect us in any way. They're not putting the salt
and pepper in YOUR soup. They are putting the spices in their
own soup.

Our world is so diverse, and yet it is difficult for us to
accept each other's preferences. Often, when we see people
doing things we wouldn't do, our mind says:

Why aren't they thinking as I think?

Why aren't they acting as I would act?

Your mind would often have you believe that your way is
superior. Your beliefs and habits are shaped by your genetics
and your environment. Each person has different genetics and
has grown up in an environment that is different than yours.
Why expect everyone to come to the same conclusion?

Our spiritual growth comes when we learn to accept that others
have different preferences, and we honor those preferences.
There is no universal religion that everyone will agree to
practice. There is no universal political viewpoint that all
will accept. There is no one way of raising children that all
cultures will agree upon. Marriage customs will vary from
culture to culture.

Getting people to agree on these issues is like trying to get
everyone to use the same amount of salt and pepper on their
food. It's not going to happen.

The diversity in this world is beautiful and we can open our
hearts to it. Within our own country and in our relations
with people in other countries, we need to continually remind
ourselves that it's perfectly acceptable for people to have
preferences. If the other person is not harming us, why can't
we just smile and get on with life?

The next time you're tempted to judge or criticise the way
other people think or act, realize that in most cases, they're
just using a different amount of salt or pepper than you would
use. Allow them to have their preferences, and there is no
need to even consider what YOU would do.

We should be taught not to attach importance to our external superficialities of existence but to realise that God and God alone pervades everything..

Open Feast

One day, Upai held an open feast. As the feast was about to end, an old man suffering from leprosy came along. The leper had a frightening appearance. He had only one eye; blood and pus were oozing from his disfigured lips, nose and eyes; he had open ulcers all over his body. As if this were not enough, an awful stench also emanated from his body. Everyone was aghast at the sight. Imagine the holy soul's bewilderment when he was told to: "Feed the old man with your own hands. He is not able to eat by himself." The holy man pulled himself together as best as he could and started feeding the repulsive leper. He, however, took great care to see that his hand did not touch the bleeding lips of the leper. As a result, some of the food kept dropping down.

After the leper had eaten and walked away, Upai was asked by the holy man: "Pick up the food from the plate and eat it". For the onlookers, to eat the food that had been contaminated by the bleeding lips of the leper seemed impossible. But, a realized soul he was, he took the plate and ate up all the remnants without the least hesitation. As everyone looked on in amazement, Upai explained to the onlookers: "Did you see how swiftly the old man walked away? Is it possible for one so terribly afflicted by open sores and leprosy to walk like that? Do you know who came to you in the garb of a repulsive leper? It was none other than Lord himself."

We should be taught not to attach importance to the external superficialities of existence but to realise that God and God alone pervades everything and every being.

Strengthen the inner urges towards virtue and goodness

People try to reform the world without making any effort to reform themselves; for, it is easier to give advice and admonish others than take advice and advance ourselves. The others are fundamentally reflections, where as the original, namely you yourself have to improve your shape! Strengthen the inner urges towards virtue and goodness; become impregnable there; then you can set about reforming others.

Love is of 3 kinds....

Love is of three kinds:
Swaartha or self-centered,
which like a bulb, illumines just a small room;

Anyonya or mutual,
which like the moonlight spreads
wider but is not clearer;
and Paraartha or other-centered,
which like the sunlight is all pervasive and clear.

Cultivate the third type of love;
that will save you.
For all the service that you do
to others through that love is,
in fact, service done to yourself.
It is not the others that you help,
remember, it is yourself that is helped.
